In Memory of Sam Hambrick

Sam HambrickSam Hambrick, 65, long-time chairman of the Mount Rogers Naturalist Rally, died Wednesday, October 20, 2010 in Marion, VA. The world of natural beauty and the community of people were both extremely important to him.

For 38 years, Sam was involved in the Smyth County school system and retired a few years ago after serving as principal at Sugar Grove Combined School for 24 years.

Since retiring, Sam was involved in volunteer service including Smyth County school board member, Smyth County Tourism Board at the Bonham House, and the Marion Morning Rotary Club. Many of his friends knew him best as an avid angler and outdoorsman. Sam is survived by his wife Cathy, three daughters -- Ann, Page, and Chaney --, two sons --Matt and Zak --, and two grandchildren.

In memory of Sam, the Naturalist Rally Committee plans to plant an oak tree at the Konnarock Community Center during the 2011 Naturalist Rally in May.
